Test II Take-Home Open-Book Essay Read the Declaration of
Independence. It is the first item in the Appendix of your
textbook. Or, if you prefer, go to and print out a copy. Pay particular attention to the list of "Facts" Thomas Jefferson used to support his argument that the colonies had no choice but to "dissolve the political bands" binding them to England. The section begins with the line "He has refused his Assent to Laws"... and ends with "He has excited domestic insurrections"... Carefully read Chapter 5 in your textbook watching for information that supports his claims. For instance, Jefferson accuses King George III of "cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world". The textbook, in the third paragraph of the section entitled The Boston Tea Party, states that Parliament passed the Coercive Acts that closed the port of Boston. During lecture I will be talking about some of the other misdeeds. Listen for them and it will make this assignment easier. The written part of the assignment is to compose an essay with some of the items on Jefferson's list and then explain them using the information from your textbook. There is no particular number you need to do; find as many as you can and write as much as you want. Please double-space the paper and use 12 point Arial or Times New Roman font. Write a real essay. One that has an opening paragraph with some sort of thesis statement, several paragraphs making up the body of the paper, and a closing paragraph. Please do not simply list the items; this is is just as much a writing exercise as an history exercise. It is best not to collaborate too closely on this assignment. I will be reading them carefully to make sure everyone has done their own work. This assignment counts as 20% of your Test II grade. Paper is due on Monday, Oct. 13 for MWF classes and Tuesday, Oct 14 for TT classes. No late papers accepted.
* Note: you will not find evidence in Chapter 5 to support all of Jefferson's claims and sometimes the evidence will not be clearly evident. You must use critical thinking skills to match the Declaration of Independence with actual events and incidents mentioned in the book.
