Study Questions

1. Explain what the Second Great Awakening was, tell where it began and when, and describe the influence it had on American religion and society.

2. Neither Jefferson nor Adams wanted war while each served as president of the United States, even though the call for war was very popular.  What did each president do to avoid war with France and Great Britain?  Were they successful?  Who did their actions affect each man's popularity?

3. Explain and evaluate the "Revolution of 1800" that brought Jefferson the presidency.  Exactly how was it "revolutionary"?

4. Explain how Napoleon came to offer to sell Louisiana to the United States.  Why did Jefferson want to purchase the territory and why did Spain object to the purchase?  Explain the outcome of the purchase and describe how Jefferson attempted to lay claim to the disputed area.

5. Explain why the United States went to war with Britain in 1812 rather than with France.  Describe the people who supported the war and those who opposed it.  Why did each side feel it was justified in its views?

6. Explain why the Hartford Convention met and describe what it demanded and why.  What happened to the two-party system in American politics after the Convention?
