Study Questions

1. Discuss the homefront in both the North and South during the Civil War.  What were the major problems faced by each side?  How did each group of citizens cope?

2. Describe the significance to the Union of the Battle of Gettysburg and the capture of the city of Vicksburg, both of which took place during the summer of 1863.  How accurate is the description that these two events, taken together, denote a "turning point" in the war?

3. Explain the problems that Lincoln faced as he prepared for the election of 1864.  What change in his vice presidential running mate was made because of these problems?  Describe the outcome of the election and explain the military actions that contributed to that result.

4. Compare and contrast the three main plans for Reconstruction:  Lincoln's, Johnson's, and the Radical Republican's.  What did each plan want to do, and how successful was each plan?  Why were new plans devised after Lincoln's had already been established?

5. Describe how the Civil War changed American society and its economy, both in the North and in the South.
