1. Explain why violence broke out in Kansas, give examples of this violence, and describe how it affected American politics.

2. Explain the main aspects of the Dred Scott case, describe how the Supreme Court ruled, and show the significance attached to that ruling both in the South and in the North.

3. Outline the opposing views of Lincoln and Douglas as put forth in the Lincoln and Douglas debates.  Who was the winner in the short term?  Why?  What were the long term results of the debate?

4. Describe the steps by which secession took place.  Why were some southerners not keen on secession?

5. Explain why compromise failed in 1860 and 1861 when it had so often succedded in the past.  What had happened to the nation that made compromise impossible?
